Here at Sidcot, we believe learning goes far beyond the classroom. We are proud to offer our students a rich variety of opportunities that broaden their understanding of the world, build confidence and develop essential skills such as communication, collaboration and critical thinking. Model United Nations (MUN) is just one of the many ways our students engage with global issues, challenge themselves intellectually and step into the role of active global citizens.
SIMUN Visited Queen’s College, Taunton
By Isaac, Jodis, Anastasia, Toby, Sophia and Philip
We had a fantastic day debating as our assigned countries, Libya and Kazakhstan, and everyone made great contributions. There were over 300 students, making it a brilliant day for meeting people and learning how MUN works. It was a great day to increase our confidence about how the real United Nations functions and to practice debating.
Model United Nations Conference, Bristol
The Sidcot team were also hosted this year by Bristol Grammar School and joined 23 other schools participating in BGSMUN.
Sidcot students represented the delegations of Mexico and Bolivia in a series of historical committees. These included debating resolutions surrounding peace in Vietnam, reactions to apartheid in South Africa and the break-up of Yugoslavia. For Lois, James and Natasha, this was their first experience of an MUN conference. James “enjoyed voting for the different clauses and discussing issues with delegates from other schools”, and Lois particularly enjoyed the General Assembly at the end of the day, which she found “inspiring” to see all the delegates brought together and engage in lively debate. Old-timers Anastasia, Sophia, and Isaac were keen to discuss how we could organise our own SIMUN conference.
