From Rome To Mount Vesuvius | Sidcot Takes On Italy!

Over half-term, a small group of students set out on our school Geography trip to Italy, enjoying an unforgettable adventure full of history, culture, and, of course, delicious Italian cuisine. The students had the best time exploring, learning, and creating memories they'll cherish forever. Here's a look at what they got up to:

Day 1 – Rome & The Vatican

After a very early flight, we wasted no time upon arriving in Rome and headed straight to the Vatican Museums. Students were amazed by the endless collection of Roman sculptures and paintings. The Gallery of Maps and Michelangelo’s incredible ceiling in the Sistine Chapel were firm highlights.

Day 2 – Exploring Rome

We spent the day walking through the heart of Rome, taking in iconic sights such as the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain, and the Spanish Steps. Navigating the busy crowds was a challenge thanks to the Rome half-marathon, but we kept our energy up with plenty of gelato and pizza along the way!

Day 3 – Herculaneum & the Bay of Naples

Heading south to the Bay of Naples, we stopped off at Herculaneum. Students explored the remarkably preserved remains of houses, shops, and baths buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. The mosaics and wooden structures were incredible to see up close, providing a tangible link to the past.

Day 4 – Mount Vesuvius & Pompeii

We headed out early to climb Mount Vesuvius. The views from the top, looking down into the crater, were well worth the climb, even through the mist and rain! . In the afternoon, we explored Pompeii. Walking through the streets and ruins gave us a real sense of life before the eruption. The day ended with a fun team quiz back at the hotel, including a ‘who said what?’ round and a picture challenge.

Day 5 – Italian Streets & The Beach

On our final day, we headed down to the beach via lively Italian streets, soaking up the culture and enjoying the last moments of our trip before heading back to Rome for our flight home.

It was a truly successful and enriching trip for everyone involved!
