We were delighted to celebrate International Languages Week at Sidcot School this week, bringing languages and cultures from around the world to life across the school. The week provided a wonderful opportunity for students of all ages to celebrate the diversity of languages, develop their cultural awareness and, most importantly, have fun!
Our celebrations began with our wonderful Facilities and Maintenance teams turning the Refectory into a reflection of the world, adorning the walls with flags from countries in every continent. Next up, students enjoyed our Multilingual Fair, where they had the chance to discover different languages and cultures, followed by an exciting Year 9 International Quiz. On Tuesday, students enjoyed a fun Chinese language and culture lesson, which was open to students from all year groups.
Wednesday was a particularly busy day! Our Junior School pupils in J1 and J2 took part in an International Languages Carousel by some of our Sixth Formers, while Year 7 enjoyed a French breakfast. Our Year 10 Spanish groups also had the opportunity to experience the energy and passion of flamenco dancing. Alongside these activities, students took part in a fun Italian lesson at lunchtime.
On Thursday, we continued our celebration of international cultures with a chalk mural session, giving students the opportunity to write colourful words in other languages and share all the knowledge they had learnt over the week.
We rounded off the week on Friday with a fantastic ‘Speak a Different Language’ Day, where all staff were challenged to use a different language! At lunchtime, students took part in a World Cup Football Tournament, with the finals to follow on Friday 2nd October.
It has been wonderful to see such enthusiasm from students and staff throughout the week. International Languages Week has once again demonstrated that languages are much more than words; they are a gateway to other cultures, perspectives and communities. We are incredibly proud of the way our Sidcot community has embraced the celebration.
