GCSE Results Day Success | 2023

Sidcot School students are celebrating an impressive set of GCSE results today, despite a return to pre-pandemic grading criteria and a nationally lower results average. Sidcot students achieved 22% of grades between 9 to 7 (equivalent to A* to A) with 88% of scores between 9 and 4 (equivalent to A* to C). Additionally, 89% of students achieved 5 GCSE’s including English & Maths at grade 4 and above, which is an increase on the 2022 performance.

There were a number of standout results this year including:

“I felt so proud of my results this morning when I opened them, and surprised as I did better than expected but my hard work paid off! The support I received from my teachers was outstanding which is why I’m excited to continue my studies here next year. I will be taking my A Levels and have chosen to study Biology, Chemistry, Psychology & Maths – it will be tough but I can’t wait!”

Joshua Came (16), from Burnham-on-Sea, achieved five grade 9s, two grade 8s, and two grade 7s. Commenting on his success, Joshua said:

“I was thrilled with my results! They really reflect the hard work I put in, the support from the School and our teachers, and I even achieved 100% in one of my Drama examinations. I plan to continue my studies at Sidcot and have chosen to study Higher Chemistry, Maths and Drama, and Standard Psychology, German and English at International Baccalaureate, with the aim to continue my studies after School at Bristol University to become a doctor.”

Alexander Milne (16), from Weston-super-Mare, achieved four grade 9s, two grade 8s, and two grade 7s. When asked about the support he received through his GCSE’s, and his future studies, Alex commented:

“All of my teachers have been so supportive throughout my time at Sidcot, adjusting their level of support to our needs and putting in lots of extra time outside of lessons to help us catch up and be prepared for our exams. I’m really looking forward to joining my friends in studying IB next year, and have chosen to study Higher Maths, Psychology and Economics, and Standard Chemistry, English and Italian.”

Jasmine Came (16), from Burnham-on-Sea, achieved two grade 9s, three grade 8s, and two grade 7s. On her results, Jasmine commented:

“I was so pleased with my results, even scoring 100% in some of my exams, and I’m cautiously optimistic to start my IB studies. I know it’ll be a lot of work but I think it will be really fulfilling. I plan to study Higher Chemistry, Maths and English, and Standard Level Drama, History, & Italian or Spanish. I’m still torn between further studies in Medicine or English and Teaching, but I know Sidcot will help me find and pursue my passions over the next two years.”

Iain Kilpatrick, Head of Sidcot School commented:

“In the context of tougher grading criteria and a 17% decline in top GCSE grades nationally, we are extremely proud of what all of our students have achieved today. The performance and resilience shown is a testament to their commitment to study and their passion for learning. While we celebrate these fantastic results, we take equal pride in the knowledge that our students acquire a whole range of additional skills and personal qualities that will help them thrive in the next step of their educational journey. We are extremely proud of our students and what they have achieved today, but equally proud of the young people they have become here at Sidcot.”

The majority of GCSE students from Sidcot will progress into the School’s newly-renovated Sixth Form, where students are given the option of studying A Levels, BTEC, and the International Baccalaureate in state-of-the-art facilities.
