In the summer term, Sidcot School welcomed families and friends to celebrate the culmination of a two-year creative journey for its GCSE and A Level art, photography, design, and technology students. This vibrant showcase directly follows the success of the recent IB Art Exhibition, which displayed an array of incredible artwork by the school's International Baccalaureate students. The annual exhibition highlighted the exceptional talent, dedication, and individual voices cultivated within the school's creative departments.
Art and Photography Highlights
The exhibition showcased a diverse array of thoughtful, challenging, and ambitious work, ranging from themes of identity, culture, and memory to explorations of relationships and the world around us. Rather than adhering to a single style, students are encouraged to explore ideas that matter to them, with each piece beginning as a personal question, observation, or creative curiosity.
Student Art Ambassadors reflected on the extensive process behind the final displays, noting:
"Behind every final piece are sketchbooks, photoshoots, tests, mistakes, breakthroughs and countless creative decisions."
Another reflection from the Ambassadors emphasised the individualised approach to the coursework:
"The work reflects the individuality of this year's GCSE and A Level artists and photographers, each bringing their own interests, influences and creative voice to the exhibition."
This freedom of exploration is supported by specialist facilities, including dedicated fine art and ceramics studios, photography darkrooms and digital suites, and printmaking facilities. Art at Sidcot extends far beyond the classroom through annual residentials. Following a trip to London last year, the department is preparing for an upcoming excursion to New York.
Many of this year's GCSE and A Level artists and photographers will continue their creative journeys after Sidcot. Popular destinations include the University of the Arts London, while others have pursued opportunities around the world. Year 13 photographer Chi will be studying Photography in Melbourne, Australia; one example of the exciting and varied destinations our students go on to after Sidcot.
Design & Technology Showcase
Upstairs, the Technology exhibition displayed an impressive range of projects produced by Year 11 and Year 13 students, spanning from aesthetic beehives to sleek modern lighting. At the GCSE level, students focused predominantly on designing storage solutions in response to AQA themes, with many utilising flexi ply curves to demonstrate high levels of skill. Meanwhile, A Level students tackled technically challenging pieces, showcasing advanced skills and a deep material understanding.
The exhibition also featured a spectacular fashion show, giving GCSE and A Level Textiles students a runway to showcase their work before it joined the wider display. The garments demonstrated remarkable technical mastery, featuring pieces such as a wedding dress, corsets, and tailored trousers. The work also carried deep meaning; one standout GCSE project drew inspiration from the 'What Were You Wearing?' exhibit, creatively altering a school uniform to deliver a powerful, thought-provoking message.
Reflecting on the hands-on environment, a Year 12 Technology Scholar shared:
"As a Year 12 student I have been inspired by the range of skills and processes used by the other students in the workshop... the standard of creativity and innovation continues to impress."
The evening also spotlighted the school’s food curriculum. As a School we are proud to offer the Leiths Cookery Course, providing a professional gateway into chefery, as well as an opportunity for students to develop key cooking skills and gain an additional qualification. For the showcase, our students proudly catered the event, providing drinks and delicious canapes for attendees. Leith’s Cookery instructor Huw Meredith shared with parents the ethos behind the culinary creations, rooted in our values of sustainability and curiosity.
Acknowledgements
The success of the evening was a testament to the hard work of the students, the vision of the creative leaders, and the dedication of the technical staff. Special recognition was given to Indie Drake-Brockman, whose patience, creativity, and curatorial skill were instrumental in bringing the exhibition together and ensuring the artwork was presented at its absolute best.
