A-Level & BTEC Results Day Success | 2023

Students at Sidcot have been celebrating their A-Level and BTEC results, with 22% of A-Level students achieving the top grades of A* and A and 73% celebrating A* to C grades.

These results follow on from the outstanding scores achieved by the School’s International Baccalaureate (IB) students last month. The IB is an internationally renowned alternative to A-Levels and this year Sidcot students achieved an average score of 32.8 points. This maintains the School’s place above the world average and puts Sidcot students in an extremely strong position to accept places at top universities across the world.

There were a number of standout results, including:

Luca Cuckson (18), from Winscombe, achieved an outstanding 4 A*s in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Further Mathematics. On his outstanding success, Luca commented:

“I was thrilled to see my results this morning! I'm really excited to be going on to do my Physics Integrated Masters at Durham in September, and hopefully this will lead to a future career in research. I'm not sure what field I want to pursue yet, maybe fusion, but I'm looking forward to learning more across the subject before specialising in research. My teachers really supported me to reach this point and pursue my dreams, providing extra lunchtime revision sessions and helping me choose a university that was the best fit for me. I will really miss Sidcot and loved my time here.”

Oliver Painter (18), from Hewish, achieved an A* in English, and two A’s in Drama and Music, and is now looking forward to taking a productive gap year:

"I was really pleased with my results! The academic, extracurricular, and pastoral support I received throughout my time at Sidcot was extraordinary, and really contributed to my final A Level results. I found English my most challenging subject, so I would regularly write additional essays which teachers would mark in their own time, going above and beyond and helping me towards my A* grade. I will now be taking a year out to teach LAMDA at Sidcot and do some additional courses and qualifications, with the aim to apply for Drama School next year to pursue a career in perfoming."

Ivan Au (18), from Hong Kong, achieved three As and a B. On his results, Ivan commented:

“I will be going off to Warwick University to study Economics, Psychology, and Philosophy. I am excited about my studies and challenging myself academically. I might even do a master's degree one day! I have loved my journey here at Sidcot, studying with my friends in such a positive environment has been an amazing experience. We all worked hard together towards the same goal, and I am excited about what the future holds.”

Maddie Didau (18) from Backwell, achieved an impressive A*, A, B and leaves Sidcot to study Liberal Arts at King’s College London. Maddie commented:

“I was so pleased to achieve the results I needed to get to King’s. I’m not really certain what I want to do with my career so I was interested in taking a course that’s really broad. I’ve been so supported over the last two years, my teachers took the time to get to know me and really cared about my results.”

Sidcot’s top performer in IB was Mihails Svarevskis (18) from Latvia, who scored 43 out of a possible 45, which is among the top 3 percent of IB students worldwide and equates to 4 A*s at A level. He leaves Sidcot with an offer to study History, Politics and Economics at University College London. Speaking of his experience, Mihails said:

“I chose the IB because I was never sure of what I was going to do professionally or academically and the IB provided a perfect opportunity to explore a range of academic fields. This allowed me to make a more informed choice as to what I wanted to study at University. The program itself, coupled with teachers willing to give both academic and personal support helped ensure I achieved my goals.”

Commenting on the results, Iain Kilpatrick, Headmaster said:

“Today’s exam results for A Level and BTEC, alongside the International Baccalaureate results earlier in the year, are a huge credit to the students’ hard work over the last two years. We’ve seen some fantastic grades and, as in previous years, Sidcot students will be taking up further studies at some impressive institutions in both the UK and further afield.

While these results provide a gateway for our students to further studies, at Sidcot we recognise that these grades are only one part of the jigsaw. Throughout a student’s time at Sidcot we put equal emphasis on the ‘soft skills’ that equip students for life after school as on the rigorous pursuit of academic achievement. We want to make sure that when a student leaves the school they are grounded, completely prepared for the life that lies ahead of them and prepared to make a full contribution to society. I’m extremely grateful to both staff and parents for the support they provide to ensure our students achieve their aspirations.”
