Mobile phone recycling
For many years, Sidcot has supported a local charity by recycling its old mobile phones and toner cartridges from printers.
One of the minerals needed for mobile phone manufacture is a rare substance called 'Coltan', which is mainly found in Congo, in Africa. In 2014 one of our visiting speakers from an organization called Congo Calling came to talk about the environmental harm caused by extracting Coltan and the impact of the mining on local people.
We want to do our part to try to reduce the impact of this mineral extraction, so if you have any old mobile phones, even broken ones, please bring them to Sidcot and we will give them to the same charity supported by Congo Calling. The mobiles are recycled and if they are permanently broken, the Coltan is taken from the phones and re-used.
The company is Bristol-based and donates any profits to charity, so it helps good causes as well as being good for the environment.
Please hand in any old mobile phones to me and I will make sure they are given to the charity.
