By Rowena Hector, Deputy Head (Academic)
As I begin my new role as Deputy Head Academic at Sidcot this term, I have been struck by how often our Sixth Formers make their presence felt in every corner of School life. On just one day last week, I saw them leading both our Senior School Assembly and Meeting for Worship, mentoring younger learners in the Art Department, and debating global politics in the Model United Nations Club. A group of Year 13s shared their basketball victories with me at break, whilst a Year 12 enthusiastically told me about their recent Sixth Form walk in Brean.
These moments left me reflecting: what makes a Sixth Form truly great? Having recently hosted our Sixth Form Options Evening, it feels like the perfect time to share a few thoughts.
For many parents, the immediate answer is strong academic results. And of course, these matter enormously. At Sidcot, students can choose from a broad range of A Level, BTEC, and International Baccalaureate courses, complemented by opportunities such as the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and other specialist programmes. Their studies are brought to life through curriculum trips, workshops, visiting speakers, and a vibrant programme of clubs and societies. All of this is supported by excellent facilities, from our Science Centre to inspiring Creative Arts spaces and dedicated Sixth Form study areas, ensuring that students are well-prepared for success in public examinations.
But academic success is only part of the story. A great Sixth Form should also be a place where young people learn how to succeed in life. This is where Sidcot stands apart. Through opportunities in sport, drama, debating, leadership, the Duke of Edinburgh Award, and community service, our students develop confidence, resilience, and independence. These qualities are not extras; they actively enrich classroom learning. The student who has led on stage or persevered on the sports field brings that same energy, focus, and self-belief to their studies.
Equally important is preparation for life beyond the classroom. With the support of our dedicated Sixth Form staff and specialist Progression Advisers, students receive personalised guidance on university applications, apprenticeships, and career pathways. Combined with our wide-ranging enrichment programme, this ensures every student develops the skills, confidence, and clarity they need for their next step. Looking at the destinations of our Year 13 students this year, it was inspiring to see the vast majority securing places at their first choice universities, including leading national and international institutions. Pastoral care is central too. Sixth Form tutors, our Wellbeing Centre, and the warmth of our community ensure that every student is supported, known, and encouraged.
So, what makes a Sixth Form truly great? For me, it is a place where academic achievement is matched by personal growth. At Sidcot, students leave not only well qualified, but also confident, compassionate, and ready to shape the future. These two years are not just preparation for university or employment; they are a springboard to lives of purpose and possibility. That is the Sidcot difference, and I look forward to contributing to this.
