Valuing Diversity and Inclusion

Sidcot is more than a school; it's a global community built on a foundation of deep-seated values. Diversity and inclusion aren't just buzzwords here—they are woven into the very fabric of who we are, guided by our Quaker values. These principles, especially Equality (ensuring all voices are heard and everyone is treated with fairness) and Respect (recognizing the inherent worth and dignity of every individual), have allowed us to create a truly welcoming environment.

You see this in our corridors every day: from our boarding houses, which are home to students of over 30 different nationalities, to the vibrant life of our student-led groups like the Afro-Caribbean Society and the Pride Group. It's also reflected in our ongoing commitment to accessibility in our facilities and the dedicated work of our Learning Support team.

To ensure this essential focus on diversity and inclusion continues to grow, we are thrilled to welcome Zoe Ashley to our team. Zoe joins us as our new Director of Learning Support & Inclusion:

"I feel very fortunate to introduce myself as the new Director of Learning Support & Inclusion. In the short time I have been here, it is clear that the Sidcot community is truly committed to inclusion and to helping every child flourish.

In my previous role, I led a large post-16 specialist SEND provision comprising four distinct areas for learners with SEND, in addition to the Learning Support Area. This encompassed two residential training facilities for autistic learners, a Sensory Learning Base, the NEET Assessment Centre, and an Alternative Classroom.

As part of one of the national Centres for Excellence in SEND, I shared best practice in inclusivity across the sector, driving transformational change that positively impacted the lives and future careers of young people and adults with SEND.

My passion for advancing both national and international SEND provision has enabled me to collaborate with a wide range of educational settings. Notably, I undertook the first comprehensive educational review of the Falkland Islands, covering all areas of provision, to support greater inclusivity and improve outcomes for learners with SEND on the islands.

During my time here, I have been particularly struck by Sidcot's nurturing atmosphere, where each student feels valued, supported, and able to learn in a way that suits them best. For families of children with SEND, this approach is especially important as it ensures each individual receives the support they need to succeed.

At Sidcot, the Learning Support specialist teachers work closely with subject teachers to understand each child’s needs and to put in place the right strategies through Individual Education Plans (IEPs), Pupil Profiles and tailored learning support lessons. This helps students not only with their academic progress but also with building confidence, resilience, and independence.

Parents are an essential part of this journey, and your insight and partnership enable us to create the best possible learning experience for your child together. I am really looking forward to working alongside you, as well as with our students and staff, to build on Sidcot’s inclusive ethos and celebrate the strengths and talents of every child."
