Getting To Know: Alison Pike, Head of Careers and Higher Education Guidance

Mrs Pike is an integral member of the Sidcot community, providing personalised and valuable advice and support to students as they navigate decisions about their futures. With exam season drawing to a close, we caught up with Alison to learn more about the vital role she plays in the lives of Sixth Form students at Sidcot.

How long have you been at Sidcot School, and can you tell us more about your role?

I've been at Sidcot for just over 4 years, managing the careers education programme; however, a large part of my role is working 1:1 with students to identify and achieve the right next step after Sidcot. From the best gap year to university success or a great apprenticeship or job, there are lots of options, and guidance is an integral part of helping someone determine which direction they would like to explore first.

What do you like the most about your role?

This is an easy one – the students.  I love the honesty that young people bring; it is a complete privilege to hear their thoughts and opinions on so many different things.

If you weren’t in your current role, what would you be doing?

I would probably be gardening! I love the opportunities in the horticultural industry and would really like to work in a well-being role, mentoring others through horticulture.

What is one cause you care passionately about?

Inclusion of neurodiverse students and how their strengths can be so well-received in the workplace.

How do you help students develop a love for their studies through your work with them?

Having a next step can really help students find a focus and purpose for their academic learning.  When we are looking at finding a good fit for after school, it is really important to think about your skillset and how you like to learn. This exploration can be really motivating.

How would you like to be remembered by the students you’ve worked with?

As someone who enabled them to see their potential so they can achieve their aspirations and see all the possibilities of what they can achieve after school.

Do you have any advice for students sitting exams this summer?

Whatever the results are in the summer, there are so many options and avenues. Sometimes the path is not straight, and better things can come of that, and it is always okay to change your mind!
