Senior School Sports Day 2023

Thursday 22nd June

Last week, the whole Senior School was raring to go for Sports Day. The sun was shining and the PA system rang out loud once again as we got underway - and what a day it was!

Over the last 6 years we have developed an inclusive, accessible, and all encompassing Sports Day, which we are proud to say is truly a day of sport that can be enjoyed by all students (and even staff), no matter their abilities. The traditional athletics competition between Houses still exist but in addition there are a number of other sports that we allow the students to choose and compete in, representing their House while competing with their year groups.

This year the roster of competitions were:

  • Athletics Track & Field
  • Rounders
  • Touch Rugby
  • Volleyball
  • Archery
  • Boccia
  • Tennis
  • Cycling Time Trial
  • Tug of War

And new this year...

  • Skateboarding & Climbing!

Throughout the year our PASS afternoon has enabled students to optionally take part in Skateboarding and Climbing. Sarah Davies (Head of PASS) arranged for Campus Skate to build a ramp on the field and for Mendip Outdoor Education to erect a climbing tower, to encourage more students to live adventurously and try something new. This made for a real spectacle on the field and lots of students had a go on the ramp and the tower when they had a free moment.

It was fantastic to see groups of friends coming together to compete in a tug of war, with staff members even getting involved to support their Houses! Indeed, all of the group activities were thrilling to watch, as students competed furiously for their Houses, working excellently together and supporting one another.

Of course, the Athletics certainly didn't disappoint, with lots of tight races and records broken. More students than ever were stepping up to throw, jump or run and we were really impressed by the enthusiasm shown by all involved (including the amazing cheering crowds).

We were treated to not just one, but three new records including:

  • Senior Boys Shotput - George L - 15.90m
  • Junior Girls 100m - Eva C - 13.5s (=)
  • Junior Boys High Jump - Noah J - 1.53m

These records have stood for many years, so a huge congratulations to all those who have added their names to the history books!

A phenomenal performance was achieved all-round with the following fantastic results:

  • The House Cup - East (552 points)
  • Junior Girls - Eva C
  • Junior Boys - Max C
  • Intermediate Girls - Summer A
  • Intermediate Boys - Tymon K
  • Senior Boys - Adrian K
  • Hermes Shield (For Outstanding Performance On The Day) - Noah J
  • The 1 Mile Cup (Girls) - Sophie C, Esther W
  • The 1 Mile Cup (Boys) - Joe S
  • Davey Shield (For Outstanding Performance This Term) - George L

A fantastic day was had by all, so well done to everyone who got involved whether that be student, parent, or staff. A particularly thank you to all staff for supporting this event, Matt Lloyd & the Sports & PE department for organising and running an amazing day, and a huge thank you to the Sidcot PTA who helped fund the hire of the skateboard ramp and climbing tower.
