How To Choose Your Subjects With Confidence

By Thomas Ruddle, Assistant Head (Upper School), Head of Sixth Form

Choosing subjects for GCSE, A Level, BTEC, or IB can feel daunting, but it’s also an exciting opportunity. At Sidcot, we believe this decision should be made with confidence and clarity. With multiple pathways and expert guidance, we ensure every student finds the right fit for their ambitions.

The Foundation: Subject Choices at GCSE

GCSEs in Years 10 and 11 provide a broad academic base. All students study English, Maths and Science, building essential skills for future success. Beyond these, optional subjects allow students to explore interests, whether creative, practical or theoretical. Choosing subjects you enjoy is key, as strong GCSE results open doors to Sixth Form pathways. Our advice? Keep options wide and think ahead, but most importantly, select subjects that spark curiosity and motivation.

Sixth Form: A Level, BTEC and IB

Sidcot offers three distinct routes for post-16 study:

A Levels: Ideal for students who want depth and specialisation. Typically, three subjects plus one of our elective courses.

BTEC: Practical, vocational project-based learning combined with some exam assessment, available in Sport, Business and Applied Science.  While Sport and Business are equivalent to two A Levels, Applied Science is equivalent to one A Level. With all courses, students will study A Levels alongside. All are great for hands-on learners seeking applied knowledge and vocational experience.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma: A globally recognised programme offering breadth and balance. Students study six subjects across disciplines, plus Theory of Knowledge, CAS and an Extended Essay. Perfect for those who value holistic learning and international opportunities.

Whichever pathway you choose, our Sixth Form provides independence, leadership opportunities, a vibrant community and committed staff, that are resourced to prepare students not just for their next steps but the rest of their lives. We see such personal growth in our students between them starting in Year 12 and graduating in Year 13.  We start working with post-GCSE teenagers and finish working with young adults who are adventurous and ready to find their place in the world.

Electives: Adding Depth and Distinction

Beyond your core programme, Sidcot offers a range of electives designed to enrich learning and develop valuable skills. Core Maths is ideal for students who want to strengthen their mathematical confidence without committing to full A Level Maths—perfect preparation for subjects like Psychology, Business, or Sciences. The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) gives students the chance to research a topic of personal interest in depth, fostering independence and critical thinking that universities value highly. For those with a passion for culinary arts, Leiths Food and Wine Certificate provides professional-level training in cookery skills, creativity, and organisation—an excellent addition for students considering careers in hospitality or simply wanting a life skill that lasts.

Aligning Passion and Practicality

Choosing subjects is about balancing enthusiasm with foresight. We want students to follow their passion. Often, success comes from studying what you enjoy. But this must also be balanced with planning ahead by checking university or career requirements. For example, Medicine needs Chemistry and Biology, Engineering requires Maths and often Physics. From traditional subjects like History and Maths to unique options such as Psychology, Music Technology or Applied Science, our breadth ensures every student can find their niche.

Alison Pike, Head of Careers and Higher Education, Dirki Balaska, Deputy Head of Sixth Form and IB Co-Ordinator, and myself are available to guide you through these decisions, helping you match your interests with future aspirations. Choosing your subjects is an exciting step, one you don’t have to take alone. To explore our full range of GCSE, A Level, BTEC and IB options, read our comprehensive Options Booklets.
