Sidcot students compete at the 2016 National Windsurfing Championships

Ruby Owen (Lower Fourth) and Guy Owen (Third Form) are keen windsurfers and belong to windsurfing club Axbridge Animals, based at the Bristol Corinthian Yacht club at the local reservoir in Cheddar.

Last weekend, there were among over 190 windsurfers who travelled to Rutland Water in the Midlands for the 2016 National Windsurfing Championships and Team15 Champions Cup. Their club, Axbridge Animals, triumphed by coming 1st place out of 16 clubs competing, and so winning the Team15 Champions cup. Ruby and Guy also had individual achievements. Ruby, who was competing in the 4.5m2 sail fleet, was 4th overall and 1st girl – she is the 4.5 national girl champion, while Guy who was in the 5.8m2 sail fleet was the overall winner and is now 5.8 national champion.

They have both been training hard over the summer and have competed in many other event but this was the big one. They were very pleased with their results. Last year, they were among 13 sailors selected for training with the RYA south west zone squad. Good racing results mean they could be selected again for the 2016/17 squads. Fingers crossed!
