We welcomed Andy and Jo from Protection Approaches, a charity which aims to prevent the spread of identity based violence. Through the telling of three powerful individual stories of genocide or violence, their talk stimulated some insightful responses from the students. We were reminded of the horrors of segregation in America in the 1960s, the genocide in Rwanda and the continuing threat of suicide bombing and other acts of terrorism today. Andy and Jo continued their theme in some English lessons and we are very grateful for their input.
The message from their charity was loud and clear: We are each responsible for our own actions and we can choose to say 'no' to violence and racism.
Trying to live up to our Quaker values, we can 'speak truth to power' and reject what we know to be wrong, if we have the courage.
