Quaker Week – 3 to 11 October 2015

Wednesday afternoon House event

Heated debate, challenging questions, supported arguments, divided teams, sparky atmosphere...do I refer to the staff room? The Houses of Parliament?

No indeed, I refer to the superb House Debates held on Wednesday as part of our Quaker Week celebrations.

Topics included:

  • Should charity begin with the homeless?
  • Should the age of voting be lowered to 16 years?
  • Should students be expected to volunteer in the community?

The Heads of Houses were extremely impressed with the quality of debate and in many cases, excellent preparation. Audience challenges were pertinent and sometimes provocative, all the things that Quakers have been known for through the centuries. It was entirely fitting that our students were given the opportunity to grapple with some tricky questions during Quaker Week and impressive that they rose to the challenge. Many asked "Can we do this again?" The answer is a resounding YES!
