Last week saw our annual International Languages Week at Sidcot and with 27 languages being spoken by our students and staff it is a week we embrace.
We were impressed with Mr Kilpatrick and Mr Hughes starting off the Monday Assembly in German and Spanish. We saw a 'Speed Communicating' event in The Hub, where students were invited to learn how to say "Hello, my name is..." in 15 different languages as well as learning some fun facts. Our Upper Fourth took part in an international quiz. Our Third Form were treated to a French Breakfast of Croissants and Pains au Chocolat (on the condition that they ordered them in French!). We held a carousel event in the Junior School where J1 and J2 were taught Chinese, Japanese, French and German through games, songs and fun activities to really bring their language to life. Some budding languages teachers in the making! With 27 different languages spoken at Sidcot.
I was very impressed with how all of the staff embraced the 'Speak in another Language for the day' and taught part of their lessons in other languages and invited students to share their languages and cultures with others.
We finished the week with designing a chalk mural of welcoming words in a number of languages on the playground in the courtyard. This depicts the internationalism of our School and one that we cherish and it was an excellent opportunity to showcase the international nature of our school and build awareness of other cultures Grazie! Danke! Merci!
