Week Ending Friday 6th October
On Tuesday we took all our Sixth Form students to Hauser and Wirth in Bruton. Hauser and Wirth has a reputation as one of the most important commercial galleries in the world, with bases in Zurich, London, New York and Los Angeles, so it is amazing and fantastic that their head office is so near us in Bruton. Apparently Hauser and Wirth (the owners) bought a holiday home in Bruton to get away from London, and liked it so much, that when a beautiful and historic but derelict farm came up for sale, they bought it, and moved their headquarters, after an extensive, expensive and very beautiful renovation. There is a bar and restaurant, as well as exhibitions and the education centre. If you are interested in Art, or food, or gardens, we highly recommend a visit!
The art on display was not easy – much contemporary art isn’t, but very thought provoking. Our students were impeccably behaved, and had a very productive and enjoyable day. One exhibition is the work of Swiss sculptor Josephsohn (1920 – 2012) displayed alongside the architectural sketchings of his friend, the architect Peter Märkli (born 1953). The other exhibition is recent works by the New York abstract painter Rita Ackermann. We were treated to a guided tour of both exhibitions with drawing exercises, and lots of information about the works. A really good day out, enhanced by the beautiful weather.
