Week commencing 12 October 2015
Last Thursday we took all our Lower Sixth Art students to the new Hauser and Wirth gallery in Bruton, to see an exhibition by the New York based artist Jenny Holzer. Hauser and Wirth is a commercial gallery, based in Zurich, London and New York, and now Bruton, where they have refurbished the beautiful and historic Dursley farm in which to exhibit work. They also have a very arty bar and offer food from the farm in their own restaurant. I was a little worried that Jenny Holzer’s work might be too difficult for our students – it is text based, sculptural and conceptual, but I was wholly wrong; with wonderful explanations by museum education officer Debbie Hillyerd, they really did get it. The conversation on the coach back to school was very animated, and lots of good work has been flowing since, in response to the visit. Many of our students came back with Jenny Holzer T-shirts as well, with slogans such as ‘Protect Me From What I Want’ and ‘Abuse Of Power Comes As No Surprise’.
If you are interested in Art, I would highly recommend a visit to Hauser and Wirth while this show is still on, it ends in November, to be replaced with recent photographs by Don McCullin.
This week it is the turn of our Upper Fourth Art students, who will be treated to the New Art Gallery in Walsall.
