Just before half term we took all our Upper Fourth artists on an exciting trip to the New Art Gallery in Walsall. This gallery houses a collection of work by sculptor Jacob Epstein, and also Epstein’s own collection of art, some work given to him by his own contemporaries, some much older, and ethnological artefacts as well. They also have two floors for temporary exhibitions, and the artist displaying work when we visited was Matt Collishaw, one of the YBA’s (Young British Artists) that Charles Saatchi made famous in the infamous ‘Sensations’ show.
Here's what one student thought:
"Brilliant Art Trip! Interesting Modern Art in an unusual building. The highlight was a modern magic lantern where strobe lights were used to create a 3D animation. Long journey but it was worth it." Will Temple
The next Art trip is the annual Monkton Wyld drawing weekend, which is November 13 to 15, and following that we plan to take all Lower Fourth students to the National Museum of Wales.
