Last weekend over 50 students did expedition training at Sidcot and in the local hills. On Saturday 8 November, Year 10 pupils following the Bronze award coped well with torrential rain in the morning – but in the afternoon they were rewarded with sunshine and excellent views from high up in the Mendips. Topics covered during the day included camp cooking and navigation.
On Sunday the weather was kinder and Sixth Form students new to Sidcot learnt how to navigate with map and compass and then were taken to different starting places from where they independently followed a route back to school via Wavering Down. At the same time the Lower Sixth group, who are preparing for their Gold expedition, developed more advanced navigation skills.
To complete an award in addition to the expedition, students carry out activities in categories: Service, Skill and Physical Recreation. When the sections are finished information is uploaded onto eDofE.
