eSafety: new SnapMaps Feature
As you may have seen and heard in the media, Snapchat has added a new feature called SnapMaps which can be turned on when the app is next updated. It does ask who should be able to see your location, but it is quite easy to set this to everyone. This feature, worryingly, allows anyone you have connected to on the platform to see exactly where you are at any time and vice a versa. However this feature can be easily turned off. To turn the feature of, Open SnapMap and click on the setting menu in the right hand corner, you can then turn the feature off.
It would be worth checking your son/daughter’s phone to see if they have Snapchat installed, turning off the feature and speaking to them about the risks involved.
Snapchat is blocked on the school network, however if you purchased a phone contract for your son/daughter with data included they will be able to access this app and the features of the app – advice on the use of 3G/4G was published in the newsletter a couple of weeks ago and can be found here.
