Learning to communicate in English is often a top priority for our international students. Our experience shows us that the more students’ English improves, the more they will get out of their UK boarding experience.
Our English as an Additional Language department is responsible for supporting all students whose first language is not English. Those needing extra tuition to develop their language skills take at least one individual English lesson a week, in addition to the rest of their classes.
In terms of exams, students in Years 7, 8 and 9 are prepared for language exams from the Cambridge Suite (PET, FCE, CAE). Those in Years 10 and 11 take IGCSE English as a Second Language as one of their GCSE options. Students in Year 12 and 13 take the IELTS exam to enable them to apply to UK universities.
IELTS is the preferred English language qualification of most UK universities. In Years 12 and 13 students have group and individual tuition to prepare them for the exam.
IELTS scores results between 1 and 9 for Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. The scores a student needs to achieve will depend on their choice of university and course.
