Sidcot’s spectacular Arts Centre is a work of art in itself, beautifully designed and buzzing with creative energy. It has three main areas for Visual Arts, Dramatic Arts and Music, along with gallery spaces that are regularly used by local artists and art groups.
In the centre of the building is a wonderfully light and spacious sculpture and ceramics studio, a large drawing studio and print making area; a studio for creative digital arts, and a professional recording studio. For drama study, students work in a performance space with professional standard facilities and tiered seating. In the concert hall there is a sprung floor for dance and Steinway grand piano. Around these main areas are music practice and teaching rooms, a fantastic dark room, props stores and costume wardrobes, plaster and sculpture studios, and a kiln room.
The Arts at Sidcot are a very popular choice for exam students. There is also plenty on offer outside the curriculum including individual music lessons, bands and choirs, craft workshops, performance training and theatrical and musical productions. Guest musicians and artists visit regularly to run workshops and give performances, and we have our own theatre company that recently performed at the Edinburgh Fringe.
In the music department a wide range of peripatetic teachers enables students to study a variety of classical and non-classical instruments, with plenty of opportunities to perform at our Monday music assemblies and lunchtime concerts. We also offer music technology, based around the professional recording studio and a suite of Apple iMac computers.
For the visual arts, the Centre has specialist facilities for etching, screen printing and intaglio, a darkroom for traditional photography and a fully equipped studio for creative digital arts. The sculpture and ceramics area offers students the chance to learn a range of crafts including glass slumping and forming, jewellery making, casting and throwing.
Students can also get involved in the programme of arts events and classes run by the Arts Centre for the local community.
We are delighted to have been awarded the Arts Council England’s most prestigious Gold Award which recognises Sidcot’s success in developing students’ creativity by offering a well planned, quality arts education that supports the cultural development of all students.
