A guide to the weather station at Sidcot.

Data collection began during the first days of May 2006

The station is located in a temporary position until the summer. This may effect the readings's as follows. Temperatures may be slightly elevated from actual and wind speeds may be lower than actual when the wind speed is higher.

It should also be noted that, as with all weather stations the data is for local conditions; At a distance of as little as one mile from the station, one might experience quite different weather. The accuracy of the weather forecast given is also quite limited and should be treated as such.

How do you receive this web page? The weather station transmits its data by a radio link to an indoor unit. This in turn is connected to a PC running a program that organizes and transmits its data (including a weather forecast) every five minutes to one of our servers. Software on the server then uploads the information to our web site - this update occurs about every minute for the home page graphics. and about every four minutes for other data. Longer term data is refreshed less often, with yearly data being updated every six hours.
The web page refreshes itself every ninety seconds. Because of this lag in uploading the pages, you may occasionally see different times displayed on graphs; After a few moments pause the page should refresh correctly. For long term graphs this will not be a problem.

Glossary:

Air Density

Air Density (the weight of 1 cubic foot or 1 cubic meter of air )

Barometric Pressure

Adjusted atmospheric pressure so that it reflects what the pressure would be if measured at sea-level.

Dew Point

Dew point is the temperature to which air must be cooled for saturation (100% relative humidity) to occur, providing there is no change in water content.

Heat Index

The Heat Index uses the temperature and the relative humidity to deter mine how hot the air actually "feels". The lower the humidity the lower the apparent temperature will be.

Solar Energy

The amount of accumulated solar radiation energy over a period of time is measured in Langleys

Solar Radiation

Amount of solar radiation expressed in Watts per square meter (W/m2).

THSW

Temperature Humidity Sun Wind Index
The THWS Index uses humidity, temperature, the cooling effects of wind and the heating effects of direct solar radiation to calculate an apparent temperature.

THW

Index Temperature Humidity Wind Index
The THW Index uses humidity, temperature and wind to calculate an apparent temperature.

UV Index

The Ultra Violet [UV] energy.

Wind Run

Wind run is measurement of the "amount" of wind passing the station during a given period of time
