Language A: Language and Literature

The subject currently offered is German and also appears in Group 1 of the I.B. syllabus.

This option is offered for native or near-native speakers of German, who, along with their study of English as a group 1 subject, then qualify for a bilingual diploma.

This is composed of four parts- two relate to the study of language and two to the study of literature.

The study of the texts produced in a language is central to an active engagement with language and culture and, by extension, to how we see and understand the world in which we live. This course aims to develop in the students skills of textual analysis and the understanding that texts can be seen as autonomous yet simultaneously related to culturally determined reading practices.

The components of this syllabus are:-

Part 1: Language in a cultural context, to include the language of gender, sexuality, political power, history and evolution of the language;

 Part 2: Language and Mass Communication, to include textual bias, stereotypes media institutions .

In addition to this there are two literary components. Candidates study a total of six works of literature (HL) and four at SL .At least one of these texts is in translation from another language.
