Group 1: English A1

Introduction to English

English teaching is not just about a subject, it’s about life. We use literature, writing and discussion to broaden the horizons of our pupils in ways that go beyond simply preparing them for public exams. Creativity is promoted: our pupils are active learners, developing an appreciation of a wide range of stimulating literature.

English teaching at Sidcot equips pupils to take increasing responsibility for their own learning and actions, ultimately providing a vital framework for adult life.

International Baccalaureate Diploma English (including World Literature)

All students taking the IB Diploma are required to study English within their six subjects.  The choice depending on ability and interest is either Standard Level English or the more demanding Higher Level.

English is a five term course, during which 11 texts are studied for Standard Level and 15 texts as well as one coursework assignment for the Higher Level. Differences from A Levels include; a wider selection of texts to choose from which ensure students experiences literature from a range of periods, genres and cultures; a clear World perspective in literature and an oral assessment and study of works in translation.
