Art & Design
The Areas of Study represent different fields of practice in Art and aim to accommodate students who quite naturally develop an interest and skill in a particular type of art or media. Each Area of Study embraces a range of specialisms and is not meant to be definitive, prescriptive or comprehensive.
Area of Study Specialisms:
- Fine Art – painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, alternative media
- Graphic Communication – design (including photography), illustration, printmaking
- 3D Design – ceramics, theatre design, product design, environmental design
- Textile Design – surface pattern decoration, printed & dyed, constructed, fashion
- Photography – lens and light based media, experimental photography, film and video, multi-media.
- Critical and Contextual Studies – a more academic rather than practical approach to the study of art and artists.
In practice we find at Sidcot that most students can be accommodated by the Fine Art syllabus, which gives the widest scope for investigation in a wide variety of media. Students who wish to specialise in Textiles will take the AS Level in the Textiles rather than the Art department. We have wonderful facilities for Digital Media – photography, film making, website design, etc. and each year we have had students specialising in this area.
