School life

Sidcot is an exceptional school and many elements combine to create its unique offering.   Quaker values underpin the motivating ethos and human element of the school, whereby all students and staff are encouraged to live by their principles.  We also believe our differentiating success emanates from some key fundamental practices that include:

  • “Let your life speak”, taking action instead of just talking about it,
  • “Live adventurously”, developing original thought and challenging the accepted and by having an adventurous curriculum of academic and extra-curricular activities,
  • “Try to live simply”, demonstrating our commitment to preserving our beautiful environment by living as simply as we can and evaluating what we really need to live,
  • Hard work and commitment, not only for ourselves but also for others.

Over 200 hundred years ago, Sidcot became a pioneer in co-educational boarding and as such, is one of the oldest co-educational boarding schools in the country.   With such an established history of co-education from an academic and residential perspective, students benefit from specially designed facilities and highly trained and experienced staff that have always met the needs of both sexes equally.  Today, nearly two thirds of our students are day pupils, however the influence of boarding on school life is as prevalent now as it ever was and enriches the friendly, family orientated atmosphere.  Being a boarding school also provides opportunities for our students to engage with each other and the facilities, well beyond the normal confines of the school day.  Many students choose to board, so they can be with their friends, have fun and enjoy the space to develop into confident and independent individuals.

As we mentioned, Quaker values are at the heart of the school.  Sidcot is a community in which people of different nationalities live, work and play.   The diverse yet inclusive nature of the school provides children with the freedom to ’find themselves’ and encouragement to feel happy and secure with who they are.  Each child is a valued member of our community and we believe that if they are happy, they will thrive academically and take advantage of the many opportunities that our school has to offer.

A highlight of the school week is Meeting for Worship, this important event gathers our students together in the Meeting House for silent reflection.   This meeting contributes to the calm and friendly atmosphere that our students and staff find so supportive and reassuring.
