Meet Will

Upper Sixth day student and Head Boy

will, head boyI have been here for 4 years and come in every day from Weston. One of the best things about Sidcot is that you do get to know most people throughout the school. I came from a massive comprehensive school where you struggle to get to know pupils in your year let alone those in other years. Everyone here is really friendly, so you can get on with everyone in your own year and other years as well. It’s good that the Sixth Form is not completely separate from the rest of the school because we can mingle quite easily.

If you’re happy in the environment you’re working in and there are no distractions, you’re going to be able to work easily. For A2 I took Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry and I’m going to Bath University to study Maths. Sidcot’s Maths Department is very successful - everyone who goes in for maths will come out with a good grade. But I reckon anyone can flourish here. You do need to be able to concentrate but that isn’t hard here because classes are small. The teachers are always there if you want to say something or suggest something. You’re never going to get thrown back ‘talk to me later’ or that sort of thing.

Sixth Formers have the top of the library all to themselves with the resources. This is purely for Sixth Form, so if you want to work you can go in there and everyone will have the same attitude as you - there are no distractions, which is good. We have a common room just down the corridor and the Upper 6th studies, which are purely for Year 13 students. These are also very useful - you can just work in peace and quiet.

Socially the Sixth Form is really good; we have our own DJ’s and VJ’s who organise all the discos here and that really brings the student influence to it. Instead of using an external company, students run the parties and they know exactly what we want.

As Head boy you have to show an example to the younger kids. There’s a bit of public speaking but not as much as I thought there would be. At the end of Year 12, students will be made aware if they are to be made Office Holders – and basically everyone will be given a title like ‘functions officer’, ‘environmental officer’, ‘charities officer’, and those people are in charge of organising specific things related to their job during the course of the year. For example the environmental person will collect all the recycling out of the recycling bins every week.

We’ve got people from all over the world here and we all seem to mix in together; it’s not as though there’s a big divide – I’ve got friends from Poland, Japan, China – you certainly get to know plenty of people from all over the world.
