Evenings & Weekends
Sidcot School is set in the heart of the North Somerset countryside, offering pupils a wide range of opportunities to pursue outdoor activities and to enjoy the advantages of a healthy, rural environment (see also the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme). We encourage pupils to explore the surrounding country and develop interests in natural history, conservation, orienteering, caving and riding (students may take a Horse Owner's Certificate at Sidcot).
Other sporting activities at Sidcot include water sports, caving, dry slope skiing, orienteering, backpacking, fencing, golf and others.
Sidcot has always valued creative activities and has well-equipped facilities for CDT (Craft, Design and Technology), Textiles, Home Economics, Art, Pottery, Drama, Music, Photography and Computer/Video Graphics. The art and ceramics facilities have recently been expanded to accommodate increasing demand in those areas. You can see some of our students artwork in the on-line Art Gallery.
There is a particularly strong music and drama tradition at the school. Over half our pupils play at least one instrument and form a variety of musical combinations, from a full orchestra and chamber music groups to a jazz band and a rock band. There are also choirs and each term we have concerts of a very high standard.
The drama studio, built in 1982 as a memorial to a previous Headmaster, is the starting point for the school’s three or more annual productions. Many Old Scholars are currently making names for themselves in acting and production. A new £4 million Art Facility to bring together visual art, drama and music, with a planned start date in September 2007, will become a huge asset to the school. It will allow much closer links between the arts subjects, enhance the technology and the building will also be a centre for arts for the local community.
Visits to concerts and theatre productions are also important features of each term.
