The Trevelyan Centre Library strives to be the academic hub of the school and is staffed by a team of professionals. Our aim is to teach pupils study and research skills, Internet searching and we are always happy to make suggestions of a 'good read'. The Library is available to all during free time and with permission from Library staff or teachers during lesson time. Sixth Form have free access to the Library whenever it is open.
The Library circulation system is fully automated and during the school day there are always members of staff on duty to check out books, answer inquiries and to provide guidance or help with research. Each class in Sidcot Junior School visits the Library on a weekly basis for stories and to borrow books.
We believe that reading for pleasure is one of the joys of our recreational time and the Library has a relaxed environment where pupils can come with their friends or on their own. Pupils are encouraged to work at tables, computers or alternatively they may sit on cushions to read. We welcome pupils’ recommendations of titles they would like to see in the library and within the constraints of the budget, try to provide their requests.
As well as the usual range of non-fiction books supporting the curriculum and a wide selection of fiction titles, there is a special collection called the Sidcot Collection. These are books about Quakerism in general and Sidcot in particular, and books written about or by Old Sidcotians.
There is a growing list of music CDs available to pupils for loan and we plan to have a collection of videos and DVDs for leisure and to support the curriculum. Use of computers with Internet access is monitored. However, pupils are allowed access to them at break times. In addition there are computers in the Sixth Form Centre and in the ICT rooms.
Within the Library is a permanent display cabinet and several areas used to showcase a variety of pupils’ artwork. If you or your family have a special collection you would like to share we have a small (locked) glass cabinet in which to display it.
A Scholastic Book Fair takes place each Autumn Term and is very well supported. Pupils and parents are welcome to come and browse and buy books.
