School House (Girls)
Jane Chambers – Houseparent
Jane Chambers has been houseparent of School House (Girls) for nearly 5 years. Prior to this she was a Special Needs teacher for the Bristol Local Education Authority.
As Jane acknowledges, not everyone takes to boarding life. From her point of view, in term time it means almost complete focus on the needs of the pupils in her care. She considers that a boarding house should provide a family atmosphere and caring of the highest quality. Parents and pupils need to know that the Houseparent is always fair, shows respect even when confronted by a 'stroppy' teenager and demonstrates extreme concern and diligence when caring for everyone’s safety.
Jane enjoys getting to know the girls away from the classroom and providing a 'college' type environment with a high level of care. School House offers girls the Christmas Party and 'treats' in the form of 'bought in' food every half term (chinese, KFC, pizzas etc). Pippa, the Matron organises small cooking events and teaches the girls to knit, which is very popular - with some boys also joining the group! Whole house outings to restaurants in Weston-super-Mare are laid on if numbers allow and Upper Sixth students dine out with House staff every May.
As Jane says, Sidcot is fortunate to have boarding staff who are totally committed to the welfare and safety of the pupils. Her team are approachable and vigilant; there is always someone to confide in or turn to and every effort is made to provide a happy, friendly working environment.
