Summer School

During the months of July and August, Academic Summer come to Sidcot to run two summer schools, Academic Juniors is aimed at children aged 7-13 years and Academic Summer is aimed at students aged 14-18 years, both schools are suitable for UK and International students.   Click here to download the Academic Summer brochure.

Academic Juniors 

Students can attend the school for 2, 3 or 4 weeks and the course offers a full curriculum of subjects in classes of up to twelve students.  There are 20 hours of lessons a week plus tutor and sports times during the school day.  The timetable includes the subjects of English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Design & Technology, Art, Music and Drama. 

This course is suitable for UK children who:  

  • require a well supervised course aimed at young learners
  • want to have a Harry Potter boarding school experience
  • are thinking of attending a boarding school and want to see they get on for a short period of time
  • are looking for a stimulating and enjoyable summer learning experience
  • want to meet and communicate with other children from a wide range of countries and cultures

As well as the above, this course is suitable for international students who: 

  • are motivated to improve their English through learning subjects that interest and stimulate them
  • want to learn and play with other children their own age
  • want to experience British culture and meet children from all over the world
  • want to experience a British boarding school
  • are thinking of studying in the UK and want a taster session first

Academic Summer 

Academic Summer teaches quality courses for GCSE , A Level and IB (International Baccalureate Diploma) students in classes of up to fifteen.  The academic programme is 30 hours per week and students will be encouraged to work independently outside the classroom to develop study skills to take with them to school, university and beyond into their professional life. 

Students study four subjects each week and will be able to choose those subjects depending on their individual needs and interests.  Their option choices will be discussed with them before they arrrive and a timetable will be written to meet individual needs.  Lessons will include a mixture of theory and practical with field trips to the local area including Bath and Bristol or London museums.  If you are a scientist, you will also find yourself doing practical experiments in the science laboratories. 

The academic subjects available include: 

GCSE Classes 

The preparation course is based on the broad curriculum of the IGCSE/GCSE programme and covers a wide range of Academic subjects appropriate to the ages and study stages of the students in the group. If students are in the 13 – 14 age, they will develop knowledge of secondary school subjects such as:

  • Art, Business Studies , Geography,  History, Literature, Maths, Religion, Sciences, Social Studies

If they are aged 15 – 18 they will have a choice of the following subjects and will choose 4 subjects a week:

Art and Art History 

The Art curriculum traces the development of art from cave paintings to graffiti. From a practical point of view, you will experiment with a range of media and materials. You will explore a variety of cultures and their attitude to the Art. Both London and Bristol offer opportunities for Art students. 

English Options 

Whether you are a native or non-native speaker, there is an English option for you. You will be able to choose from: IELTS / Exam Preparation, English Grammar, English Literature, World Literature, Essay Writing or Presentation Skills. 

Humanities  

The Humanities curriculum makes the most of the international nature of the student body and encourages you to explore subjects in the context of the locality. You will be able to choose from subjects such as History, Geography, Economics, Politics and Psychology. 

Mathematics 

The Mathematics option covers algebra, geometry and statistics and is good preparation for the IB Diploma or A-Levels. Students from different learning backgrounds will work together to help one another understand challenging mathematical concepts and functions. 

Maths Studies 

For those who do not like Mathematics or are not good at it; Maths Studies will help you with some basic everyday Maths. 

Sciences 

You study Biology, Chemistry and Physics intensively. This will involve a mixture of theory and practice. You will use fully-equipped science laboratories and be able to do practical experiments such as dissection. 

Theory of Knowledge (ToK) 

You will explore the central question, How do we know what we know? in a variety of ways and with reference to the acquisition of knowledge in a wide range of educational and cultural settings. You will learn to appreciate your own and others’ knowledge gained through language, reason, emotion and sense perception. 

Sport 

 The sport programme encourages students to work as a team and to reach their personal bests by setting and achieving targets in sports as diverse as football, badminton, basketball and cricket.
