Mathematics
The Mathematics Department aims to help pupils achieve their maximum potential in the subject. In addition to lessons, the department runs regular workshops to provide further help and encouragement.
Every pupil takes Mathematics to GCSE and some also take GCSE Statistics. Mathematics and Further Mathematics are very popular options at A Level: over half the Sixth Form study these. Many of our students continue to study Mathematics or related disciplines at university.
Exam results for Mathematics remain consistently high at all levels and many pupils take one of the UK Mathematics Challenges (Junior, Intermediate or Senior) each year, with a very successful record.
Years 7 - 9
During Years 7 - 9, pupils develop an understanding of Mathematics and an enjoyment of the subject as a practical tool and as a fascinating subject in its own right. Pupils are set, giving all the opportunity to work at a suitable pace and achieve their highest potential as they prepare for the GCSE work ahead.
GCSE Mathematics and Statistics
Every pupil at Sidcot is prepared for the GCSE, building directly on the skills learned during the previous 3 years. Although setting allows pupils to work at an appropriate pace, each is entered for the tier of entry deemed most suitable. The majority of our pupils take the Higher Tier which enables the highest grades to be achieved and forms an excellent preparation for the A level courses. Many pupils also take GCSE Statistics adding a useful extra dimension to their mathematical studies.
A and AS Level Mathematics
Despite its fierce reputation for being a ‘hard’ subject, Mathematics is the most popular A Level subject at Sidcot. Students who have mastered the Higher Tier work find the challenge of Mathematics at this level rewarding and many continue to study Mathematics, Engineering, Science or related subjects at university. Our course offers a balance of Pure Mathematics (4 units) and Applied disciplines (2 units), Statistics and Mechanics.
A and AS Level Further Mathematics
For those who demonstrate real talent for the subject, Further Mathematics provides an opportunity to take this ‘double subject’ option. This demanding course offers a programme of Pure and Applied Mathematics with Decision Mathematics included in the course. Further Mathematics is an excellent foundation for those who really enjoy the subject and who want to study some aspect of Mathematics in Higher Education. As an increasingly popular subject in our Sixth Form, A Level results in Further Mathematics are exceptionally high.
