Drama

drama

Drama imparts skills and learning experiences that prepare pupils for a range of careers in the performing arts and mass media. More than training for a vocation, drama offers many transferable skills that will benefit pupils in both professional and personal experiences later on in life: Vital speaking skills, negotiation, teamwork, commitment and dedication are just a few of the talents developed by a drama pupil at Sidcot.

Aside from these invaluable assets, pupils also have fun! Learning takes place in a challenging and vibrant environment. Pupils are encouraged to see the world through the eyes of others, examining stimuli from a range of cultural, social, historical and personal perspectives.

Year 9 Drama

drama lessonDrama in Year 9 establishes the basics of dramatic concepts, ideas and skills, from improvisation to more sustained devised/scripted pieces. Pupils also study a range of playwrights, both renowned and obscure, to broaden their knowledge of the subject.

Pupils will get the opportunity to express themselves more confidently, manipulate audiences and evaluate the impact of their work upon others. The methods of working are social and supportive with many lessons taking the structure of workshops, which helps pupils to gain a better understanding of themselves and the world around them.

GCSE Drama

GCSE Drama is a highly creative, intellectual and rigorous course that builds upon skills introduced in Year 9. Coursework consists of workshop sessions based around a central theme. Whilst the coursework is completed in groups, pupils are marked individually and this makes up 60% of the pupil’s final grade.

The final 40% of the exam is a prepared performance, which may either be a devised piece or a scripted piece, taken directly from a play or based around it.

Pupils find the course demanding and thoroughly enjoyable and often participate in the many productions staged at Sidcot.

AS / A2 Drama and Theatre

This course demands tenacity, perseverance and ultimately a genuine passion for the subject.  Students will examine work from the perspectives of the director, the designer and the performer. Well-known plays are studied and students devise their own work, taking inspiration from other playwrights, directors and designers. Consequently there are many theatre trips during the course.  70% of the final grade is coursework; 30% is a written exam.

All Sixth Form students have the opportunity to participate in the many productions staged at Sidcot, often commanding lead roles.

For students with a love for Drama / the Performing Arts, plus a desire to explore the world around them, AS / A2 Drama and Theatre Studies is a rewarding choice.
