Quakerism at Sidcot

Visitors sometimes ask what role Quakerism plays in our School. Outwardly, there are few overt Quaker symbols in the school. Most assemblies are non-denominational, although short periods for silent reflection are important parts of such assemblies. On Wednesday morning there is a Quaker style Meeting for Worship held for the Senior School, whilst the Junior School has its own assembly. Boarding pupils attend the Meeting for Worship with members of their House staff once every five weeks.

Sidcot Meeting HouseQuakers set store by how each person lives his or her life, rather than elaborating a finely detailed theology. The importance of leading a life to high ethical and moral standards is central to Quaker beliefs, and to the pastoral system at Sidcot. They believe that there is good in every person and that this is the aspect of each personality, which must be supported, strengthened and developed.

meditatingWhile about a third of our teaching staff are connected with the Society of Friends, about 10-15% of our scholars come from Quaker families. We are proud that so many parents entirely unconnected with the Society of Friends have chosen Sidcot for their children because of the supportive and encouraging atmosphere which Quakerism engenders.

We aim to teach by example, setting the highest standards for personal conduct and illustrating our belief that violence never provides the solution to personal disputes. This is exemplified in the staff relationships with pupils and the absence of any military cadet units at the School.
