George FoxThe Religious Society of Friends was founded by George Fox in around 1652. The Society was a non-conformist dissenting group whose members turned away from Anglican Worship, many being arrested and imprisoned during the reign of Charles II. One consequence of this persecution was that Quakers set up a number of Quaker Schools for the education of children of members of the Society.

Sidcot School traces its routes to 1699, having been founded by a group of local Quakers. It was formally re-established by the Society of Friends in 1808 for the education of children of members of the Society and others. Although much has changed since then, the object of the School remains the provision of a boarding and day School in accordance with the principles of the Religious Society of Friends. The School’s Committee of Management, its Governing Body, is largely appointed by representatives from Quaker meetings in the South West of England.
