Our Environment

Sidcot is dedicated to considering the environment in all we do, especially in ensuring we have as minimal an impact from our actions as a school as we can.

Open Spaces

Respect for the environment is one of Sidcot’s values and the school actively promotes environmental awareness, encouraging the children to consider issues in all aspects of school life.  We take our responsibility seriously and any new developments have to be energy efficient and built with the environment in mind.  Our newest addition, the Sidcot Arts Centre was an RICS (Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors) Awards finalist in the sustainability category of the SW regional heats.  Our Junior School extension and Leisure Centre were also developed to be as energy efficient as possible with photovoltaic panels to harness the sun’s energy for heating the swimming pool and Junior school.

Here are some initiatives at Sidcot that engage our students in environmental work through the curriculum, Duke of Edinburgh Award, after school activities and the CAS element of the IB Diploma.

Gardening Club

The gardening club is active all year round with students from the Junior and Senior schools cultivating our established plots across the campus.

Recycling Projects

We have a number of environmental initiatives at Sidcot including; recycling of paper, clothes, materials, cans, glass and cardboard that are run by the pupils with the support of teachers and other staff.

Fair Trade

Our catering department source fair trade products where available and use local suppliers to reduce our carbon footprint.  Students have set up their own enterprise called TESCOT- selling Fair Trade produce at school events to promote awareness with pupils and parents and raise funds for their charity CYAG (Connecting Youths around the Globe).

Uniform Shop

No material is ever put to land fill at Sidcot.  Our uniform shop recycles every scrap and also supports schools in Africa by sending old uniform stock for their pupils.

Yeo Valley

We are currently in discussion with well known local organic business Yeo Valley, in regards to a partnership opportunity utilising our teaching resource, students and land.  The idea is for the school and company to work together to farm our land thus creating real learning experiences for our students.
